The state of Florida has more than 53,000 COVID-19 cases and the number of deaths related to the pandemic is approaching 2,400. The state Department of Health has the total cases at 53,285 and the statewide death toll at 2,364. Here in Escambia County, there are 784 confirmed cases along with 29 deaths. Santa Rosa County remains at 237 cases and 9 deaths. Statewide, over 953,000 tests have been returned and the positivity rate is 5.6%, compared to 4.1% in Escambia and 3.2% in Santa Rosa County.
DRIVER CHARGED IN FATAL BALDWIN COUNTY CRASH
A Milton man behind the wheel in a fatal accident in Baldwin County on Wednesday is now facing charges. The Alabama Highway Patrol says 20 year-old Hunter Richey has been charged with manslaughter and will be held in the Baldwin County Correction Center. At around 1:15 Wednesday morning, Richey was driving westbound on I-10 near Mile Marker 53 when he veered off the road and struck a tree. His passenger, 26 year-old Brittany Hans, was not wearing a safety belt. She was ejected and died at the scene.
JUDGE RULES AGAINST DEO LAWSUIT
A Tallahassee judge is denying a request to force the State of Florida to immediately pay all unemployment benefits to those who have applied. Judge John Cooper says there’s nothing he can do to compel the Department of Economic Opportunity to fix or speed up the payments within a certain time frame. He heard from several Floridians who are still waiting for money they claim to be eligible for. Thousands of others say they are in the same position.
ENSLEY SOUTH NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP RESULTS
Escambia County collected and disposed of approximately 42 tons of debris during the District 3 Ensley Neighborhood Cleanup on May 22nd. This is part of the county’s ongoing effort to help keep local neighborhoods and communities clean and safe. The event allowed residents to leave items at the curb to be disposed of free of charge by the county and partnering agencies.
